The Big Four of tennis — Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray — reunite for the first time since Wimbledon last year at the upcoming hard-court major. With them will be former US Open champion Stanislas Wawrinka as they complete a star-studded field.
Nadal faces tricky opening-round test
Defending champion Nadal stars as the top seed and he faces compatriot David Ferrer in a tricky first-round clash.
The 17-time Grand Slam champion, who won the Rogers Cup before taking a break, may face Britain's No. 1 Kyle Edmund in the fourth round.
Ninth seed Dominic Thiem is also drawn in the top half of the bracket and he may face fifth seed and last year's finalist Kevin Anderson in the fourth round.
The winner of the tie may face Nadal in the quarter-final.
Third seed Juan Martin del Potro opens his campaign against Donald Young of the United States. He may face eighth seed Grigor Dimitrov in the quarter-final.
The Bulgarian meanwhile faces a tricky test in what is expected to be a blockbuster first-round tie against wildcard entrant and comeback man Wawrinka.
Federer likely to meet Djokovic in the quarter-final
Meanwhile, second seed Federer, who is eyeing bidding to win his first US Open title since 2008, may face 30th seed and mercurial Nick Kyrgios as early as in the third round.
Federer also faces a prospect of meeting Wimbledon champion and tournament favourite Novak Djokovic as early as in the quarter-final.
Federer said he is not thinking too far ahead and that he would want to take it one step at a time in the upcoming tournament.
Notably, the 20-time Grand Slam champion lost to Djokovic in the Cincinnati final earlier this month.
"We can't control it. I'm not in a quarter-final match yet. I'm not in a second-round match yet. You just go back to – just the next few days are important. How am I feeling by my first-round match?" Federer was quoted as saying by the Metro.
"Sure, you sometimes wonder, like, is it easier to play guys with not such a résumé like a Novak so early in the tournament? But because he won Cincinnati, I could have also played Novak in the fourth round if he wouldn't have made a move in the rankings."
Meanwhile, seventh seed Marin Cilic plays his first-round match against unseeded Marius Copil. He may face 10th seed David Goffin in the fourth round.
Fourth seed Alexander Zverev, who is yet to mark a mark at the Grand Slam level, will be hoping to go deeper into the tournament.
India's Yuki Bhambri, ranked 96, faces a stiff test against higher-ranked Pierre-Hugues Herbert of France in the first round.
