The websites of several colleges in Kolkata were hacked into by suspected Pakistani hackers on Friday.

The website of Kolkata's Ram Mohan College was hacked by someone who called himself 'Virushacker' from Pakistan, who defaced the homepage with a black flag and a message that read 'Muslims are not terrorists'.

Websites of other colleges such as Anandamohan College and Maharaja Manindra College were also hacked, with slogans such as 'Shiv Sena Murdabad' posted along with images of burning Indian flags, according to DNA

The websites of some of the colleges were not restored even till Saturday, with the images still displayed on the homepage.

Kolkata's cyber police are reportedly investigating the crime.

"We have learnt that colleges websites at large have been hacked. So far, no college authorities have registered any complaint with us, but we have started an investigation into the case and will try to restore operations as soon as possible," a cyber police official told DNA.

Suspected Pakistani hackers have targeted several Indian websites in the recent past, such as the website of the Principal Comptroller of Defence Accounts (Officers) (PCDAO), with the hackers accessing sensitive details about army officers' services.

In April this year, the official website of the Kochi Metro Rail Limited was hacked into by suspected Pakistani hackers.
