Friday, July 20, was a big day at the Parliament as the Modi-led government faced its first no-confidence motion in four years. The ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and the Opposition debated the motion moved against the BJP by its former ally Telugu Desam Party (TDP).

The Opposition geared up for a major discussion as it was believed that the ruling party will demolish the Opposition, not just by proving the numbers but doing it in the way that will be Prime Minister Narendra Modi's launch pad for the 2019 general election campaign.

  • After saying that Shiv Sena would take part in the debate and support the BJP,  the party is said to have withdrawn a whip to its lawmakers to vote in favour of the government.
  • "Discussions will start at 11 am today. Nation is concerned about the stand of Shiv Sena. Our party will make the right decision. Between 10:30 -11:00 am, party chief will himself tell the party about his decision," Raut told ANI. 
  • Now, Sanjay Raut of Shiv Sena has said that the final decision will be taken between 10.30 am and 11 am. 
  • The TRS too is likely to follow suit and stage a walkout, according to reports. 
  • Earlier, party MP B Vinod Kumar had said TRS would participate in the debate in the Lok Sabha.
  • News18 reported that the Congress may stage a walkout after Modi's speech, due to which the procedure may not be carried out
  • Meanwhile, several parties have said that the trust vote might not take place on July 20, as many are planning to stage a walkout. 
  • The Congress has said that it is ready for the debate and is looking forward to "expose the government."
  • Speaking of the trust vote, Congress leader Anand Sharma said that it wasn't "only a question of numbers."
  • "We will use the occasion to expose the government and raise various issues concerning the people of the country and tell the truth to the people," NDTV quoted him as saying.

  • The NDA at present has 312 members in the 535-member Lok Sabha
  • To defeat the no-confidence motion, the BJP will require to gain a mark of 268 votes.
  • The no-confidence motion was moved by the TDP on Wednesday, July 18, as a part of its demand for special status for Andhra Pradesh.
